Can't set Spotify as default media player in Google Maps

As the subject says, I "Can't set Spotify as default media player in Google Maps".

Spotify is installed and working. When I launch Google Maps and go to set Spotify as the default media player, Spotify is in the list.

I select it and then the screen just shows a rotating circle that says, "Loading...". Then I get a message that says, "If you want to set a default media player, you can do it later in Navigation.", and the "Show media controls" is deselected again and there is no default media player shown there.

I have disabled battery optimization on all relevant associated apps. That didn't work.

This is very frustrating. I'm going on a trip tomorrow morning and I really need this to work right.
