This seems to be working correctly for me today. Maybe the tech guys fixed it overnight. Is it fixed for you too?
Ugh, it looks like they screwed this up recently when they changed back to "add to queue" from "up next". I wish they'd stop looking for ways to break features which have worked well previously.
You can mark tracks in the queue by tapping the circle to the left of the track title then hit "delete" at the bottom to remove them.

I don't think this is completely solved. Normally and inbetween, it clears if you click on shuffle or the beginning of a playlist. However, yesterday I bumped into a situation, where all these solution do not work. It always goes back to the orginal playlist, a selected album. The only solution was to clear the cache, but then I had to login again.
Conclusion: it is still a bit buggy.
I've been having a similar problem. I go to the queue. I mark each track for removal (why can't I delete the entire queue??!!) and as soon as I remove them all, Spotify just returns the entire album to the queue. It was driving me crazy as there's no Delete Queue button. I had to leave the app and reboot my mobile. First time didn't fix it. I had to do it twice.
I came to spotify from google music 2 days ago and this was driving me crazy.
I realized that when you select an item from the queue, all previous items are removed. Therefore the fastest way to clear the queue is to select the last item!

Hope this info is useful. Let us know if there's anything else you need help with.
It would be even more helpful if Play Queue could be permanently switched off as an option and then your users could play what they wanted instead of having to perform these processes continuously
