Control panel on Google Maps open Spotify app instead of old panel

Control panel on Google Maps open Spotify app instead of old panel

It's been a while now, since I've moved to a new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Spotify controls, the one at the very bottom during Google Maps use, doesn't open as it used to showing the album and controls, instead it opens Spotify app instead, which is useless while driving.

This basically make so Google Maps goes into PIP mode while Spotify is fully open. Basically the worst combination while driving.

Phone and app are updated to the latest version as of today, Spotify is premium and I've already tried to uninstall and reinstall, nothing changed.

I would like to have mu controls back and to be able to look at the artist like I used to.

Hi @naxter24r,

Thanks for reaching out, I'd be happy to check!

I tried reproducing this on my end and it works for me, so can you try to unlink Spotify from Google Maps and follow these steps to link it again afterwards? Make sure that the car mode is also activated under Settings for Google Assistant in the Navigation settings.

If you're still experiencing the same thing afterwards, please send us a recording of how it looks like so that we can check and assist you further. If you can't attach it here, you can upload it to Google Drive (make sure the file is available to anyone with the link) or YouTube as an unlisted video.

Let us know how it goes.

Take care

Hi, I've just sent you a PM with the video link.
I've already tried disconnecting and reconnecting spotify as well as uninstalling and reinstalling it. Nothing changed

Hey there @naxter24r,

Thanks for your reply.

Would you mind posting the video recording here in the thread? Your replies can be seen for more than one mod, so it'd be really helpful if you could post it here. You can attach the video in your next reply in mp4 format, or you can also upload it to YouTube or Google Drive and make it public, so we can visualize it.

On another note, please send us the exact OS and Spotify version you're running on your device.

Keep us in the loop!

I haven't shared publicly the link because I'm not comfortable sharing my Google maps, that's why. I'll send that to you via PM.

Like I've said, during maps navigation, if I press on the Spotify controls, it opens Spotify app. On my previous phone it just enlarged the preview but all inside the maps app.

The Spotify version I'm running is 8.9.48.575

Hey @naxter24r,

Thank you for keeping in contact and for the info shared.

Just to make sure we're covering all the basics, would you mind checking on a different device (using your own account) to see if it makes any difference? If you don't have another one available, you can borrow one from a friend or family member to test it out.

If the issue persists, include in your next response the exact OS version of your device, along with the Spotify version you're currently running to continue investigating the case.

We'll be on the lookout.

Currently I'm running version UP1A.231005.007.S928BXXS2AXEF, that's the latest sw there is for my phone. But as I've said, I've had it since the beginning.

On my old S20+ I did not have that issue for example. Can't tell which version that was since either don't have it here, but was the latest one available and I've used it until January

Hi there @naxter24r,

We appreciate you keeping in touch.

However, when we ask for the OS, we mean the exact Android version you have installed, not the build. You can check that from your device's settings > About phone > Android version. Additionally, send over the Spotify version you have installed. You can find it with these steps.

On another note, were you able to try with a different account on your current device? This is something that might help us identify if it's device or account-related.

We'll be here!

Don't get me wrong, I gave you exacty what you asked. By giving you the build I made sure to be even more accurate than just "Android 14". You have all in there:

UP1A.231005.007.S928BXXS2AXEF mean:

U= Android 14 (upside down cake)

P= is the vertical, so the primary platform branch is P in this case

1A= is the branch build

231005= that's branch release date

007= that's the version

Then you have the specific stuff for the phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, as I've already said (S928B) and I'm running Samsung' OneUI 6.1.

Spotify version, which I've already gave you earlier, is now changed and is 8.9.50.552.

Unfortunatly I don' have other accounts to try, but I doubt it is my device. There was another user with a similar issue in another post but she got no response.

Since then I've also tried with my Tablet (Galaxy Tab S6, Android 12, Samsung OneUI 4.1.1, Spotify version 8.9.48.575) and it does the same thing.

I mean my old S20+ used to be just fine for 4 years, so that's something you changed on your end I'd say.

Just so you know, I've replied with all the info you asked, but a moderator deleted my post marking it as spam

Hi @naxter24r,

Hi, is there any update on the matter? App keeps updating and soon Android too with the new montly patch but nothing has changed on my side.

Hi, I think I found out how to fix this problem.

1. keep spotify running. No matter you lock it in the multi-app view, or in some background permission settings, it really depends on what phone you are using. If you do not want to keep spotify running, then you would have to open it every time you start driving. I guess that works too. Because one of the problem is google map can not pull spotify up to start running.

2. Go to map settings, navigation setting, media provider. Here comes the tricky one. Link spotify, then choose another app as defaut provider. If you go back to map now and start the navigation, you will find the control buttons are back... I do not know why, but this actually works for me.

Hope this will help you out. This is really annoying.

Unfortunately that doesn't fix my issue.

I do have amd I always had control buttons in the lower bar. My problem is that on my old phone, if I clicked on the artist for example, or the track name, that tab opened withing the map app, allowing me to see the track image and so on. And if I clicked on it again it went back to the usual map.

What happens now is that it's reducing map as PiP and opening full Spotify, which is idiotic to say the least because I'm driving and that basically make drive mode useless.

I remember having this ability too. You could tap the icon at the bottom of the screen and it would open a mini driving mode version of Spotify with the album cover and skip, pause, and back were options. If spotify wasn't playing, you could still tap at the bottom and it would open an assistant driving mode screen with the option to call (frequent contacts), read texts, play spotify (most recently played) and a few other things I don't remember.

This was until a few months ago. I didn't change my phone, still have my same Pixel 4a, but one day it stopped working and acts as you described. I figured it was a google map issue, not a spotify issue, but you're the only one I've seen who's accurately described the annoying behavior. Wish there was someone who knew what to do.

Edit: looking into it further, Google disabled this feature in Feb 2024: https://www.androidpolice.com/google-assistant-driving-mode-shutting-down/

Sorry for the bad news but doesn't look like it's possible any more, idk why they disabled it - very annoying.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all your replies!

Our tech folks are aware of this behavior and it's being looked into further. While we can't give you a specific timeframe for if or when this will be fixed, we recommend keeping the app up-to-date to make sure you get the latest fixes and feature as soon as they're released.

Cheers!
