Device not seen over usb

I can't see my Xperia phone in Spotify over a usb link. In fact there is no devices tab, empty or otherwise. Spotify sees my phone fine over wifi to use connect, but doesn't identify it in any way that allows me to sync. Used to work, but not now. Running Win 8.1 on my laptop. Laptop sees and correctly identifies it when connected. Have tried reinstalling app on phone, no difference.
Any ideas?

Hi. You cannot sync files via USB, only wifi I'm afraid which is why your device isn't showing

OK. In that case why does my device not appear in Spotify on my laptop over WiFi, since, as I say, I can use my phone to control Spotify via Connect?
