Laggy scrolling in playlists

Laggy scrolling in playlists

I have posted several times previously about reduced performance in scrolling playlists and queueing. Each time, the issues have been resolved promptly. However there seems to be some obsession to reintroduce these issues in further updates.

In the current version of Spotify, on my Galaxy S10, the playlist scrolling performance is reduced. This does not apply to certain pages, such as Artists pages or "Your Library" page, these are working fine. This leads me to believe that the overal app performance is not the issue, but some particular change found in playlists.

I could post a video, but the issue is similar to my previous posts/comments where I have submitted screen recordings and further information.

In short, scrolling appears laggy and less consistent. Swipe-to-queue is a bit less responsive than previously. Can be compared to swipe-to-pin a playlist under Your Library tab, this is acting the same as swipe-to-queue did in previous versions, and is free from issues.

Hey @Rayinfluense,

Thanks for reaching out!

I can see that you posted about a similar issue last year, but this time around we don't have a trend with performance issues like the ones you're describing. I am also running the same Spotify version on the same device, but couldn't replicate the lagging issue. Is it across all playlists or just longer ones?  Do you have an SD card on your phone? If yes, then try removing it to see if that makes a difference.

Another thing I can think of is trying a different network to rule out any connectivity issues and also making sure that you don't have Power saving on in your phone's battery settings. You can also try adding Spotify to Never auto sleeping apps from Battery -> Background usage limits.

Let us know how it goes.

Hello!

Thank you for your rapid response.

I have tried your suggestions and additionally cleared all cache in the app, however I see no difference. I can test this on a different android phone as well later today.

I can point out that the issue is seen primarily in large playlists, scrolling quickly, and especially when the app is newly launched.

I will send a short screen recording of this. As seen, the issue does not apply to My Library, despite also being quite large

Hey @Rayinfluense,

Thanks for the response and the screen recording!

It'd be great if you can check on another device just to see if it might be account-related, although it doesn't seem likely in this case. It's also worth asking a friend or a relative to log in their account on your phone to see if they experience the same issue.

I also noticed on the screen recording that the Wi-Fi signal and the coverage aren't so strong, so it'd be great if you can test this out somewhere else where the reception is a bit better and with a different internet connection (it can be a different Wi-Fi or using mobile data).

Keep us posted.

Hello again!

I managed to borrow another phone, a OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite 5G, on a different spotify account. The issue is very similar here and does not seem related to hardware or setup. However, I can understand if this only affects a small number of people, as I can reproduce this only with excessively large playlists. Note however, that these particular playlists have worked fine previously. Additionally, scrolling seems fine once the album covers have been loaded and cached, so there certainly seem to be something different with loading album thumbnails, which affects navigation. Also note that I have tried this on a different network than my home wifi.

I attach another screen recording from this instance

Hey there,

Thank you for your message.

We appreciate the insights about this behavior with huge playlists and cache-related processes, they're really helpful. We've passed this info internally so the relevant teams could be aware of it. At the moment, we'd recommend keeping your Spotify app updated, so you don't miss any improvements coming your way as even if we don't have a date for these changes to happen, we hope it will be as soon as possible.

Thanks again for the information. If anything else comes up, the Community will be here for you.
