Wont play unless the app is in the foreground and the phone is unlocked

Wont play unless the app is in the foreground and the phone is unlocked

Hi, I recently got spotify premium and if I play a song on my phone then lock my phone while the app is still in the foreground, it will continue to play. However, once the song ends it will not go on to the next song. Additionally if I open up the app for the first time (after not using it for a while), it will say the song is unavailable and then i have to exit the app, reopen it, it'll crash, then I reopen it, and then it will finally play music but the app has to be open. Once all of that is completed, if i open another app and do something in it then go back to spotify and try and play another playlist.... fat chance. it says the songs are unvailable. Why is this happening?

Hey @b3lewis,

What phone are you using? Samsung introduced an agressive power saving option which is closing Spotify when the application is sent to the background or the screen display turned off. Check this thread.

There is a battery saving option that you may need to turn off.

If it's not a Samsung, look for any battery saving setting your phone might have, and turn it off to see if that fixes it.

Hope it helps. 🙂

Oh that makes total sense, thank you! however I'm still experiencing the start up issue with the unavailable songs error. I am using a Samsung galaxy S7 fully up to date

@b3lewis

If that's the case, it looks like you may need a clean install, which means deleting everything Spotify has created in your phone:

1. Uninstall the app from phone by going to 'Settings' -> 'Apps' then scroll to the Spotify app and tap on it. Once loaded press 'Uninstall'.
2. Using a file manager make sure that the below folders are deleted if they still exist:

  • /emulated/0/Android/data/com.spotify.music
  • /ext_sd/Android/data/com.spotify.music
  • /sdcard1/Android/data/com.spotify.music
  • /data/media/0/Android/data/com.spotify.music

You will lose all preferences & offline playlists in doing this.
