High CPU on Puppy Linux when idle

High CPU on Puppy Linux when idle

I'm running Spotify on Puppy Linux 7 on an Asus EEE PC900. This netbook is dedicated for Spotify and not running any other applications.

When playing music, the netbook runs smooth and quiet, but quickly after SPotify stops playing, CPU usage goes through the roof and the fan starts spinning, making annoying noise. When I shut down Spotify, the netbook cools down almost instantly.

What is causing Spotify to use high CPU when 'idle' and what can I do about it?

Note: when I close Spotify and start it again, there are no high CPU issues. Only after Spotify stops playing CPU usage goes high.

Your situation is load average, rather than CPU usage. This is a common problem on Linux systems and I recommend one of the Linux communities for specific solutions to your distrubution. I have my favorites but there are plenty of equal quality. You are using a 900MHz processor on a 400MHz bus, and for the Spotify Client that is just fine, especially if you are only using it and the O/S. Your ASUS is built with a 20GB ssd. Clean up your drive - if you use the download or offline feature of Spotify, that can take up space fast. Check your configuation to optimize your ssd if you haven't already. Basic input/output speed test command

# sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda

Not all applications do this and if you only use a few, it may seem application specific rather than Linux side. I am unfamiliar with ssd configs, but I used the disks utility and the good ole "10 things to do after installing (your distribution here) ..." recommendations. I find those fix or manage most problems with a linux distro. Give that Puppy a bone... Linux rocks 🙂
