Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks: App Nap

Was looking through my activity monitor (Task Manager) on my Mac and I realized that App Nap wasn't being implemented, which will drain loads of battery while on the go.

Below is a short description of App Nap and its mechanics together with a screen shot.

App Nap helps you save power when you’re working with multiple apps at the same time. OS X can tell when an app is completely hidden behind other windows. And if that app isn’t currently doing something for you — playing music, downloading a file or checking email, for example — App Nap conserves valuable battery life by slowing down the app. But as soon as you start to use it again, the app instantly shifts back to full speed. It’s so seamless you’ll think it had been running that way all along. App Nap works the same way with Safari tabs, so only the visible tab is running at full speed. With App Nap, CPU energy use can be reduced by up to 23 per cent.1

That is to be expected, even when you aren't looking at Spotify - the desktop client is part of the p2p network so it will be sharing tracks you have cached with others on the Spotify network.

App Nap actually works, just took this screenshot while Spotify was minimized and not playing music:

Spotify goes in and out from App Nap. As Peter wrote, it is a P2P client, so it is to be expected. App Nap doesn't kick in immediately either, unless the developer asks for it. App Nap is enabled for all windowed apps, but developers can modify its behaviour. Spotify devs probably haven't optimized it, and probably won't, since it is meant to be used actively by the user and as a P2P client. Basically, if you're not using it, close it completely (Command + Q).
