Playing stream on several devices simultaneously

Is it really correct that it is impossible to connect to more than one device at a time? How crazy is that? Am I doing something wrong?

I have just bought an Amazon Echo Plus, partly because it will connect to my Spotify Premium account. I've just discovered that if I start the Echo playing in the house, then go to my computer in my studio in the garden, I cannot even listen to the same stream without shutting off the Echo! Let alone listen to a different stream at the same time. 

I have only one question: why?
