Solved!

playlists contain a note symbol instead of the track number

My Question or Issue

Some of my playlists contain a note symbol instead of the track number that normally is displayed. I think it happens when I copy songs from another playlist. It seem to be caused by certain songs. How do I resolve this and get the numbers back? The help page for spotify is not useful.

Hey @bosi

Thanks for your reply.

As @AlejaR mentioned previously, podcast episodes have a different icon before them:

Also, you can group together all the episodes from the same podcast within the playlist by using the sorting option Album or podcast. That way, it'll be easier for you to find the podcasts.

Additionally, you can sort the playlist by Duration. Since podcast episodes are usually longer that songs, it's likely they all be shown at the beginning or the end of the playlist, depending on how you sort it by Duration.

Lastly, you can find many different articles about playlists in our support site here. you can type 'playlists' in the search bar and you'll see a variety of articles about playlists and how to better take advantage of them.

Hope this helps. If you need a hand with anything else, the Community is here for you.

Hey @bosi,

Thanks for posting in the Community and welcome 🙂

In this case, can you send us a full-screen snip? This way we'll have a better look at what you're mentioning.

On another note, can you share with us the exact Spotify version you have installed on your computer?

Lastly, would you mind sharing with us what troubleshooting you've done? Did you notice if this is happening on the web player as well?

We recommend starting off with a clean reinstall of the desktop app to see if that makes any difference. You can find out the steps to do so here.

We'll be on the lookout!

Here's a bigger snapshot of spotify. I hope you get the picture now. I cannot take snapshot of the whole playlist since it contains 7000 songs.

I'm using the latest version of spotify that you have rolled out on Windows 10. It updates itself. It doesn't matter as the bug has been there since the new desktop layout was launched at the beginning of this year.

It also appears on a brand new laptop with Windows 10 Enterprise, freshly installed, incl Spotify (but I did not create the playlist on that laptop).

I have not found the reason for this to happen other than it is related to copying songs from other people's playlists. I think the problem originates from a single song that is "bad" in some sense.

Hey @bosi,

Thanks for your reply and for the info shared.

We can confirm this is an expected behavior within playlists which contain both songs and podcasts episodes. You can differentiate the podcasts from the songs, since podcasts have a different icon. If you remove those episodes, numbers will return.

Hope this clears things up. If you have any questions or need a hand with anything else, we're always a post away.

Cheers!

Thank you @AlejaR,

That's an explanation.

Now back to my original question, how do I fix it, meaning how do I find those "episodes" in the my 7000 song playlist? How does an episode look different from a song, if it differs at all? What can I search on? What should I look for? I quickly scrolled through my playlist, but I could have missed it.

And, since this feature is not described in Spotify's help pages, I argue that it does not exist! Do you have a normal (comprehensive) user's guide for Spotify? In fact, there is no help section at all that describes a playlist and what you can do there.

Thank you, I found the pod!

I did notice an extra column, release date, but not that the album column was named "album or podcast". I will never be like Sherlock. Anyway, sorting on it did not help as it does not sort on album or pod, only on the title.

And the help page is absolutely useless, but you probably know that already.

Sorting on duration was the trick, but I still had to scroll through 200-300 songs to find that symbol to the right.

Even easier it to keep an eye on the "release date" column and quickly scroll through the play list (which is possible since the pgDown bug is fixed since a month or so).

Well, I do have opinions on the design, but that will have to do.

Well, if you really mean that, this bug list seem unattended and there are some bad bugs there...

I thought you would be quiet... 🙂

Thanks.  That was driving me nuts.  I found the podcast in my playlist using the icon in the # column.

Interestingly, a podcast was added that I had never seen or heard of before.
