"Can't play current song" when gaming

I'm playing games and I get this issue ( Overwatch mostly) where after I leave a match, the song suddenly stops and I can hear a 'pop' as though the headset has disconnected. All other audio still works (game volume, youtube etc.). I get the impression the audio channel switches playback device (even though my only playback source is my headset speakers) for some reason. Anyone have experience with this or can help me with a fix? It's very irritating and requires a restarting of Spotify or else several minutes of waiting before it will play the song with volume.
