Enhanced Like Button: Multi-Category Preferences for Better Recommendations

The current "like" button on Spotify is great, but it doesn’t fully capture the complexity of why we enjoy certain songs or artists. Music appreciation is nuanced, and a single "like" button often feels too limiting to express our preferences. Sometimes, we like songs for different reasons or at varying levels of intensity. I propose an enhanced like button system with multiple categories and star/heart ratings, allowing users to specify what they love about a song or artist ans how much they like them. This includes:

1. Star Ratings (1-5 Stars or Hearts): Users can rate songs on a scale from 1 to 5 stars to express how much they like a song.

2. Multi-Category Preferences: Alongside a star rating, users can select specific reasons why they like a song (e.g., vocals, melody, lyrics).

How It Works:

When pressing the like button, a pop-up menu appears allowing users to:

Rate the song (1-5 stars or hearts).

Instead of just "liking" a song, users can choose from several options:

🎤Vocals: Highlight amazing vocals, vocal mannerisms, or timbre.

📝Lyrics: Indicate appreciation for a song's storytelling, themes, or wordplay.

🎵Melody: Show love for the instrumental arrangement, harmonies, or overall tune.

🌌Vibes: Capture the emotional or atmospheric energy that resonates.

🤔Interesting: Mark unique or experimental tracks that intrigue you.

These reactions could be selected from a drop-down menu or as icons that pop up when you long-press the like button (similar to Facebook’s reactions). If users don’t want to engage with the pop-up every time, a default star rating option can be applied automatically, with the ability to adjust it later.

How This Improves Recommendations:

Spotify can tailor its recommendations more precisely based on the aspects users enjoy. For example:

If you love a song's vocals, Spotify could suggest artists with similar vocal styles, even if the genre differs.

If you appreciate lyrics, recommendations could focus on songs with strong storytelling or similar themes.

If you love melody, Spotify could prioritize tracks with similar instrumental arrangements or moods.

Additional Features:

Flexible Library Sorting: Users can filter songs in their library based on star ratings or categories (e.g., “Show me all my 5-star tracks with great lyrics”).

"Why This Recommendation": Spotify could explain why a suggested track matches your preferences, e.g., “You liked the vocal range in Artist A. Check out Artist B.”

Multi-Faceted Recommendations: Combine preferences for more complex suggestions (e.g., songs with similar vocals and vibes).

---

Benefits:

1. Better Engagement: This system encourages users to interact more deeply with Spotify, enhancing their overall experience.

2. Cross-Genre Discovery: Explore music based on your favorite elements, not just your usual genres. Star ratings and multi-category preferences help surface songs that fit your tastes, even across genres.

3. Personalized Experience: Make your Spotify uniquely yours by focusing on what truly matters to you.

4. Support for Artists: Help niche artists shine by connecting them with listeners who value their specific qualities.

This system would make Spotify feel even more intuitive and personal, allowing users to dive deeper into their tastes and find hidden gems across genres and regions. It ensures that Spotify doesn’t just understand what you like but how much and why, creating an even more personalized listening experience.

I love your idea, I had a similar thought (your version's way better than mine though) even something simple like a 'Double-Like/Super-Like' would be amazing because, let's be fair, there are some songs we like.... but every once in a while, a song comes along and it's like "HolyF******gS**t 🤯 I loooove this!!!"🤩 ...Something like that just demands more recognition 😅

People love to rate and review everything—so why should they take their opinions to other platforms when Spotify is where the music is? This feature would allow premium users to rate and review albums directly within the app, enhancing user engagement and keeping the conversation about music within Spotify.

How It Works

  • Ratings & Reviews: Users can rate an album and write a review, but only after they have listened to it in full.
  • Friends' Ratings: See the albums your friends have listened to and their ratings, reinforcing Spotify’s social experience.
  • Personalized Rankings: Users can create ranked lists of albums they’ve listened to, making it easier to track and share their favorites.
  • End-of-Year Summary: At the end of the year, users can look back at all the albums they’ve rated and reviewed, adding a new dimension to Spotify Wrapped.

Benefits

  • Attracts Music Critics & Enthusiasts: Encourages professional and casual reviewers to engage more with Spotify.
  • Strengthens the Social Aspect: Users can discover new music based on their friends’ ratings and opinions.
  • Enhances User Retention: Keeps discussions about music within the app instead of external platforms.

By integrating this feature, Spotify can become more than just a music streaming service—it can evolve into a true community for music lovers.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Also, it would be great for less known artists with great music, better rating = better recomendation.

I guess the title pretty much explains it. People will be able to review individual albums, artists, songs and rate them out of 5.

Users will be able to decide whether their ratings/reviews are public or not. For public reviews, other users can like/comment on the reviews just like letterboxd.
