Godzilla, Soul, Garage Rock, and the best of times

Godzilla, Soul, Garage Rock, and the best of times

Back ground:

I considered calling this playlist Godzilla, Garage Rock, and the best of times, but I kept the old name, "Blue Collar Heaven", mainly because I had some Youtube action happening on it before I brought it over to my brand new home here at Spotify. I have a binding theme in mind behind this list that may seem at first glance to be lacking in direction, but seems to deliver on every occasion. Most of this post is going to be geared towards artists,(that's me too), but curators may find it interesting and have things to add as well. Love to hear it.

When my kid was 7 he was into flicks that tended to have monsters in them. I noticed that he and his friends didn't seem to care much if the show was animated or real action/special effects. It was of course normal at that time to see flawlessly generated creatures in movies, and if you did not have the budget then you were not making the movie. I got the idea in my head that he might like the old godzilla movies. I used to catch them on early Saturday morning network television when I was his age. We're talking guys in rubber monster suits laying the rock down on actual scale Tokio models. I did not think they would get the suits, but I was curious how they would take it. It was a huge hit, not just with him but all of his friends and their friends as well. He still has the classic King of Monsters poster on his condo wall to this day, and loves all the original group of films.

The Point:

My point is, it is the soul, feel, and sweat of a thing that makes it work, not the cash, or the fancy package. There is great reward to be had in understanding that fact. I have played in alot of bands and done a lot of shows, and I can tell you that there is no better feeling than knowing that this room full of people are having a real good time, or at least a real time because of what I wrote or what I am playing. That in and of itself is good, but what makes it "Worth it" is knowing that you wrote or played what was real to you. Then you are having the same good time with them, and that is powerful. Like James-browm-Blues-Brothers-movie jumping-in-the-Churh powerful.

I know some of you are thinking,"hey, what is powerful is a nice wad of cash in my pocket." You're not wrong, but that's another playlist.

The songs here have one thing in common. They have enough soul and drive in my opinion to come across at any production level, and in any circumstance. Some of them are, or were hits, but that is not what landed them on the list. I am going for authenticity and soul, not anything else. It can be great, goofy, geeky, funny, or hard, baut it has to feel real. There are entire genres missing here, not because they don't deserve to be here but because I yam what I yam and I like guitars and moving my feet. If it has a hooky Riff and a good beat I am a total push over.

My mission:

My mision, not excluding shameless self promotion, is to create a support network for new artists. I am primarily trying to connect with artists that know not what they like, and do what they do because they like it, not because it makes good marketing sense. We could argue that that is the same thing, but not enough room here for that. I don't give the tiniest rat's ass about how shiney your production is or how perfectly you fit into your proper algorithmic nitch, (sorry spotify god, please don't punish me),. What I want is content and a universal core. In my little universe that means garage rock, but I think of a lot of things in that way, not just rock and roll.

If you are making songs and you are still reading this:

1st off, hats off to your patience

2nd, If you happen to get me here, I want your music, ( artists primarily).

3rd, We are all trying to make the perfect pop hit, let's be honest, and there are a thousand people ready to make you rich and famous, but I really want the stuff that feels like you, and helps your friends get through their day, even if it is just to make music together.

4th, You have to be able to say that you think it's good, and mean it, (your song I mean).

5th, I have a full time job and a family, don't get mad if I miss you. I will have to vet the list, even if it is eyes closed and point. I don't like endlessly huge lists, they don't really help anyone.

Eventually I am ok with this being all new artists.

6th, Please listen to at least some of the list. It covers some ground , and you won't get it on the first song, but you'll get it.

You can go to soundplate and find the list below on thier site. There is a free submit portal there.

If anyone tries to take your money, **bleep** well tell me about it.

I'll try to keep an eye on this post as well, but that might be spoty.

Best,

Dave
