Amazon Echo - showing on phone when not on local WiFi network

Hi all,
I have an android with my Spotify premium account. I have added the same account to my Amazon Echo.
The problem i have is when music is played on the echo (both when i am at home and away from home) it shows on my Spotify and i cannot listen to any music without stopping what is being played on the Echo.
I like to be able to control the songs on my echo from the Spotify app when i am at home, but when i am away i don't want there to be any interference and i want both devices to be able to listen to it's own choice of music.
I have turned on only show local devices on same WiFi in the settings but that hasn't done the trick.

Any suggestions?
