Can’t play separate music on phone & echo dot at same time on family plan

I have a family plan, so I’d expect my child to be able to play music on their echo dot upstairs while I listen to things on my phone. However, Spotify won’t allow this. Their Echo Dots will stop music on my phone and vice versa. Apple Music had no issues with this. If not resolved I will have to go back to Apple’s family plan.
