Allowing users to customise audio playback

Allowing users to customise audio playback

Hello,

I would like to know whether my idea would be in compliance with the Spotify SDA Terms.

My website would allow users to stream audio using the spotify web player. This would only be available to premium users (Spotify premium users, not premium users of my website). One of the features of my website would aim to allow users to customise the playback of some of their songs. This would allow them to either skip certain sections and/or change the volume/speed of certain sections.

This would be done with the user's consent as they would set out the customisation. The user would further have the option to modify or remove the customisation.

This customisation would only use the controls provided by the Spotify web player. It would not visually obscure this player, nor illegally manipulate the audio, rather it would listen for the current timestamp and use the provided controls to change the playback settings.

Since this uses built-in functionality provided by the Spotify web player api, I was of the opinion that it would be allowed, however I decided to come here to be certain. I would appreciate any advice on the matter.

Hi @nouralbeirouty,

Thanks for sharing your idea in the Community, and welcome!

After reviewing point III.7 of the Spotify Developer Policy, I can confirm that any customization affecting audio playback, including skipping sections, adjusting speed, or changing volume, would be restricted. The policy specifically prohibits alterations to the original audio playback, even with user consent.

To stay compliant, it might be worth exploring other features that enhance user interaction without modifying the audio.

Let me know if you have more ideas or if there’s anything else I can help with!

Cheers,
