It seems that many artists have had their genres reworked or removed completely.
That means that the /artists={artistIds} endpoint returns very different results than yesterday
E.g. Tove Lo, London Grammar and Corinne Bailey Rae return no genres as at all.
Is this an intended change? This has significant impact on mine (and likely many others) applications.
I've noticed this too, seems like many artists either have no genres or the wrong genres assigned to them. Definitely a major bug
I really hope it's a bug and not intentional. So many artists have no genres any more, even Elton John
Any updates? 🙂
I have this same issue, just last week artists like Noah Kahan and Mac Miller had generes and now when u search for them there is no associated genre
This issue unfortunately still persists 😞
After comparing the genres of a few artists before and after this change, I noticed they removed what are considered "micro-genres" or sub-genres. Some of these specify the artists' origin or describe the instrumentation associated with the majority of their songs.
Travis Scott Genres: rap, slap house -> rap
Rauw Alejandro: puerto rican pop, reggaeton, trap latino -> latin, reggaeton, trap latino, urbano latino
You can get a glimpse of what they consider to be broad or generic genres by going to your liked songs and seeing the filters at the top.
In other words, it's most likely intentional - a rework towards simplicity.
True, I'm starting to think you are right, but it does seem weird to me that many artists have no assigned genre at all, even very popular artists such as Lana Del Rey.
Perhaps that's just quirks until they sort it out eventually, but it would be very nice with an official statement from Spotify acknowledging the change.
This is also affecting my application. Even if the genres are now simplified, a lot of artists are missing them completely now which breaks some functionality.
Reviewing my logs this issued seamed to have started at 15 January.
I am facing the same problem.. Any updates on this case??
Is nobody from Spotify going to reply?
This issue seems to be ongoing for almost two months now. Nothing from Spotify either.
If they're dealing with making genres work better It'd be good if they added genres to songs too.
I’m having basically the same issue but LITERALLY up until two days ago, I was able to properly select a genre in my liked songs, click shuffle, and not have any issues. All of the sudden, it’s not shuffling one genre, it’s shuffling ALL my liked songs, and i don’t even put a genre on. I’m extremely frustrated. Is this happening to anyone else or just the latter issue up above?
There is currently an ongoing issue, causing Spotify to ignore genre filters. You can read more about it here.
