My Question or Issue

Hi everyone!

I'm developing a Tabletop / Dungeons & Dragons campaign management application and seeking some clarification regarding commercial usage of the Web Playback SDK. The app helps Dungeon Masters create more immersive gaming experiences by seamlessly integrating music with their campaign planning and execution.

I've already implemented a working prototype where:

- DMs can pre-plan and associate specific tracks/playlists with campaign events and scenes

- As the story progresses and scenes change, music automatically transitions to match the current narrative

- The hierarchy (campaigns -> sessions -> events) allows DMs to organize music at different levels, from broad campaign themes to specific scene ambiance

- Everything is integrated directly in the campaign management interface, eliminating the need to switch between apps during gameplay

While the app will follow a freemium model with premium features, all Spotify integration functionality will be available in the free tier for users with Spotify Premium accounts. I want to ensure this aligns with Spotify's policies.

I've submitted a commercial usage request and wanted to connect with the community to ensure I'm aligned with Spotify's vision for the SDK. Has anyone else gone through the commercial approval process recently? Any insights about what to expect or tips for proceeding would be greatly appreciated!

Best regards,
Silv

Hello! Spotify is meant for personal use only, not for business purposes, as stated in their Developer Terms and Policy. This means you can't create an app that uses Spotify for commercial reasons.

If you want to include Spotify in your app, the app must be free from all aspects. Also, keep in mind that Spotify's rules prohibit things like mixing or overlapping Spotify music with other audio content (including other Spotify Content), as mentioned in point 7 of their prohibited applications section.

I hope this clears things up and helps you consider other options.

Hi @ArcanySilv

Thanks for posting in the Spotify Community, and Welcome!

To add to what @Developeris already wrote: the Developer Policy does not allow to use Spotify services inside games. Streaming inside commercial apps is also prohibited.

You can read more about it in the Developer Terms and the Developer Policy

I hope this clarifies things. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Cheers!

"Streaming inside commercial apps is also prohibited."

If the use case is just showing the name of the song and artist that is being played, is that considered "streaming" and allowed for a commercial app? No playback controls whatsoever.
