Code not valid in your country

I bought a one year subscription as a present for a friend. I live in Italy, he lives in Belgium and he can't use the code, getting the message below. How can I fix the problem or ask for a refund? Thank you!

Spotify gift cards can only be redeemed on Spotify accounts registered in the same country where they were purchased.

Where did you purchase the code?
