Artist keeps duplicating on my followed artists list. How do I fix?

Solved!

Artist keeps duplicating on my followed artists list. How do I fix?

So I've been having this problem for a while where I'll be scrolling through my artists and whenever I get down to one artist, it starts to duplicate 10 or 20 times and making it so I can't scroll all the way down. I've tried unfollowing the artist but that didn't work either. The artist is Ryo Fukui, if that helps at all, though I doubt has anything to do with the particular artist, it is the only profile that keeps duplicating.

Hi! So I did unfollow Ryo using the right click method and its still there. I also found the appdata information and deleted prefs as well as the stuff in the users folder. When I logged back in, though, Ryo was still there.

So, I went to my mobile version of spotify and found Ryo's Japanese account, which I was still following, and I unfollowed it, removing his account from the list. When I went back and re-followed him on the computer, there were no duplicates! If anything else happens, I'll let you know, but I think the problem is solved! Thank you so much for all your help and putting up with me.

Hey @LukeBouchard,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community and welcome.

Depending on the device, the artist view may change, but not duplicate the followed artists. Usually, this type of issue is related to some damaged cache stored on your device from previous versions. We'd recommend performing a clean reinstall of the app. This is often an overlooked step, but it's more thorough than a regular one and can be helpful in getting rid of any cache that might be causing trouble.

If the issue persists, would you mind checking on a different device to see if it makes any difference?

Lastly, to keep investigating your case, include in your next response the make, model and OS version of the affected device, along with the Spotify version you're currently running.

We'll be on the lookout,

So, I use just straight up vanilla Windows 10 and my spotify version is Spotify for Windows 1.1.91.824.g07f1e963.

I tried doing the clean reinstall and unfortunately I'm still having the problem. This is only happening on this device, a standard, unmodified HP Compaq.

Hi @LukeBouchard!

Do you experience the same behavior when changing the sorting order of your followed artists? You can try enabling/disabling the app's Hardware Acceleration to see if it would do the trick. Just click on the three dots in the top left corner > View > Hardware Acceleration.

Something else that's worth trying out is deleting the prefs file from the Spotify installation folder as this would clear your account's cache:

  1. Fully close the Spotify app (make sure it's not running in the Task Manager) and go to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Spotify\.
  2. There you'll find a file called prefs, which holds info about the currently logged in account. Simply delete it.
  3. While in the Spotify folder, you'll also find a Users folder. Open it and delete its contents as well.
  4. Restart the Spotify app.

Note that you'll be logged out and your settings will be reset, so you'll have to adjust them again. If you had music downloaded for offline listening, you'll have to re-download it as well. Your library, however, will not be affected, so no worries there.

Keep us posted on this. Cheers!

So, I did the first thing and it worked... kind of. The artist is no longer duplicating but he still shows up in my followed artists despite not following him. If I do try to follow him the duplicates start coming back. I also tried looking for the Spotify appdata folder but for some reason I don't have one. I have one for all my other apps but not Spotify.

Also, I thought I'd mention that Ryo had 2 profiles, one under the English alphabet and one under the Japanese one. Now only the English one shows up. Maybe the merging of those accounts caused the problem, since I was following both before the problem started.

Thanks for helping me on this, too, I appreciate it!

Hey @LukeBouchard!

Have you tried unfollowing the artist directly from Your Library by right-clicking on their Artist profile > Unfollow? If not, give it a try and let us know how it went. You might also be onto something when it comes to the artist previously having two separate profiles - we'll pass the info on to the right folks so they can look into it.

As for the Spotify folder, it should normally be under AppData > Roaming, but if you can't find it there, you can locate it by doing the following:

  1. Make sure Spotify is running and open Task Manager by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.
  2. Go to Details and right-click on one of the Spotify.exe processes > Open file location.

Have a good one!
