Newbie Questions

Newbie Questions

Hello,

I'm new to Spotify - I'm willing to change from another service after 12 years.
Maybe someone can clear some things up for me 🙂

1)

When adding a song to my Favorites playlist, is there any indicator that this particular song is a favorite one? So when the same song is also part of another (custom or recommended) playlist, that I can recognize, that this song is already a favorite one.

2)

Apple Carplay - Refers partly to 1) ... When in Carplay mode, and a song have the PLUS icon activated, it does not mean that this song is automatically a favorite one. It only meens, that this song is already part of any playlist. When deactivating the PLUS icon and activating it again, this song will become a favorite, unless it was one before. Bug or Feature? I don't know - please enlighten me 🙂

3)

Is there any way to hide podcasts section on the start screen?
On the top-side (mobile and web) I can filter for "ALL" "MUSIC" "PODCASTS".
I am interested in MUSIC only. Is there a way to save this setting, so that don't need to tap it any time I start the app or login into the webplayer?

4)

Maybe I'm missing it, but I cannot sort my custom playlists by e.g. "last added" when using the webplayer. I cannot find any button for it. Clicking on the tables' headers/captions won't work.

5)

Is there a way to start playback on iPhone. Then closing Spotify on that iPhone and resume playback later on another iPhone?

6)

When un-liking songs or bands ("do not recommend in the future"), is there an option to undo my decision later?

7)

How about a HiFi plan? I couldn't find any news about that. Except that this feature is planned for about 4 years now. Any news on that?

I searched the internet before, but could not find satisfying answers.
maybe one of you pro-users can help me out a little bit 🙂

Any advice appreciated.

REGARDS

Hello again,

no response yet?

Please provide me with some information.

Hey @1spot1, welcome to the community!

We have a bit to go through, but I will try to answer as many of your questions as possible!

  1. When you have added a song to your liked/favourite playlist, you should be able to see a green tick next to it that indicates it is in there; however, if that same song is being shown to you from another album, it won't have the green tick. More information can be found here!
  2. Unfortunately, I don't know much about how Spotify interacts with Apple CarPlay. However, I will see if I can find out some more information for you when I can.
  3. I couldn't find any way to show only music by default on your home page, but this is something you could put up as an Idea for Spotify to implement in the future by submitting it over here!
  4. If you want to sort your custom playlists, you can do so by clicking where I have marked below!Screenshot 2025-02-11 011859.png
  5. I can't test this on multiple phones; however, if you start playback on one device, as far as I know, the other device needs to sync up by opening Spotify while your other device is playing a song. From there, your second device can continue from where you left off.
  6. I have seen a "Don't play this artist" button, which will allow you to undo that later by clicking "Allow this artist to play".Screenshot 2025-02-11 012526.pngScreenshot 2025-02-11 012645.png
  7. I can't give you a definitive answer; we will all have to wait for Spotify to let us know.

I hope this helps you, but please let me know if you have any other questions!

Cheers,

CryticalAce

Hello CryticalAce,

thank you for your very detailed reply!

I really appreciate it!

1)
I cannot find additional information regarding my "problem".
In my use-case, I really need to see if a song, which is part of a playlist, is already a liked song.
The green tick is not always a reliable indicator.
No matter whether in iOS App, Web Player or Windows App.

2)
Awaiting your reply on that. Thank you 🙂

3)
I'll give it a try!

4)
Yes, I figured out today that sorting by date added works on iOS and Windows App,
not in Web Player. It's ok for me.

5)
Same. Found the "soulution" also today.
It works well, as far as I now how 🙂

6)
Good to know. But is there also kind of table/overview which shows the entire list
of unwanted artists/songs?

7)
ok...

Have a nice day!

Hey 1spot1,

Thanks for the reply!

For point 1. I'll see if I can find some more information on that and get back to you!

With 4. I was able to use the sort button on the webplayer using Chrome, maybe try another browser or incognito and see if it pops up?

Lastly for point 6. I'm not sure, I don't believe there is, but I'll do some research and get a definitive answer for you! 🙂

Cheers!

Hey @user-removed

Welcome to the Spotify app and to the Spotify Community!

There's already some great answers provided here, but I wanted to add some more clarity.

1: When you see a green ✔ Check icon on a song, it means that it has been saved to Your Library. A song added to either (or both) Liked Songs or one of your own playlists counts as being saved to Your Library.

I have a detailed guide on the (+) Plus button and how it works that you can read by clicking here.

Right now there is no way to see if a song is exclusively added to your Liked Songs playlist. In the desktop app and Web Player my current workaround is to right click each song and look at the options menu for the green check icon with the words "Remove from your Liked Songs". When I see that, then I know if I have truly Liked the song. There is no workaround in the mobile app however. There has been lots of feedback about this in the Community, you can search the Ideas Exchange and vote for similar ideas. In my daily use of the app, I have the same issue as you. In my opinion, I liked the heart button the app used to have, I thought it was much easier to see the songs I've liked.

2: This is currently the correct behavior. Although it doesn't work the same as it does in the mobile app, so it can be confusing.

The way I use CarPlay is to just listen to music I already like via my Liked Songs or other playlists and I do not press the plus button. I think the Plus button works better in the iOS app.

Since it's been a while since I last used the plus button in the car, I tested CarPlay today and it looks like the Plus button on the Now Playing screen works differently depending on where you are listening from.

Playlists: When listening to songs from your own playlists, the Plus button is already marked with a check icon and when you tap on the check icon, the song is removed from the current playlist. Tapping on the plus button again re-adds the song back at the bottom of the playlist. However, if the song is Liked, you can't add it back to the playlist, tapping on the plus button again does nothing it seems, that's odd in my opinion. -- Looks like there's no way to add a song to Liked Songs when listening from your own playlists.

Albums: When listening to songs from albums, the plus button adds or removes the song from your Liked Songs playlist.

3: Right now there is no way to customize the Home tab to Music only, but it's been a highly requested feature. You can search the Ideas Exchange here in the Community and vote for similar ideas.

4: Unfortunately, the Web Player does not support playlist sorting options (sort order of the songs inside of playlists). You will need to download the full Spotify desktop app to be able to use this feature. On the Web Player there is a "Install App" button you can click on. Once you download the full Spotify desktop app, you can change the sort order of the songs inside of playlists using the options menu at the top, or by clicking the column headers (1, 2 , 3 times). Sorting options for the left Your Library sidebar however are supported in the Web Player.

5: With the Spotify Connect feature, the Spotify app usually will remember what you were last playing so you can switch between devices and pick up the current song you were last playing on the other device. It should show up on the Now Playing bar at the bottom of the mobile app. However, I've noticed sometimes it doesn't always show the last played song on my other device, only the last played song on the current device. It doesn't always sync and work consistently in my experience, but it usually works great.

6: I am not aware of any page that shows you a list of currently blocked artists / songs. Right now there is only a page for blocked users.

7: In the news recently, Spotify leaders have said higher quality audio is still planned and that this year they are doubling down to improve the music experience. There is no more information at this time, but stay tuned to official Spotify news.

Hello,

I've been testing Spotify for a while now, and I think I’ll be switching—at least for now—from Deezer to Spotify after nearly 10 years. The recommendations and the content of the suggested playlists are great and match my preferences very well. I've also experimented a lot with the API. While Deezer also has an API, it is currently closed, and no one from their support team can tell me if or when it will be reopened.

There are, however, a few features I miss in Spotify (to be fair, some of them are also missing in Deezer):

  1. A quick way to see if a song is not only in one of my playlists but also marked as a favorite.
(This feature is available on Deezer.)

  2. An overview of excluded artists, songs, and genres, so I can easily review and possibly reverse my decisions.
(This feature is available on Deezer.)

  3. A "taste reset" function. I mostly listen to hardcore/metalcore/deathcore (about 90% of the time), so my recommendations are based on that. However, if I spend a week listening to country, '80s, or disco, my suggestions shift accordingly. It would be useful to have an option to reset a) skipped counts and b) listened counts so that Spotify can reassess my listening habits without bias.
(This feature is not available on Deezer either.)

  4. Better audio quality. While not always noticeable, the sound quality sometimes falls below market standards. Some songs seem to be heavily compressed. This isn’t much of an issue when driving on the highway, but it becomes quite apparent when listening on a Hi-Fi system at home. I know the community can’t change this directly, but maybe some pressure could be applied.
(This feature is available on Deezer.)

Well, maybe there’s some inspiration to be found in these points. Overall, I find Spotify very appealing.

Wishing you a great weekend!
