Continuous play, always

Continuous play, always

I want to find out if it is possible to have Spotify play continuously; go from one playlist to the next, just keep playing all day, all night.  If this is possible, do I have to have premium.  I am using Spotify on my iTouch with wifi.  iTouch is hooked up to speakers and power source to play in my house.

Is there anyone out there who can help me?  My kids won't !!!

Thanks so much

Hey! Welcome to the community 🙂

I am not an iOS user, but going from past experience on other platforms it is not generally possible to get Spotify to move to the next playlist once it has finished the current playing one.

Thanks for the welcome Peter....let me give you an example of what I am trying to do....

I have a playlist with almost 700 tracks.  I have the iTouch plugged into a power source and speakers.

The playlist with 700 tracks in therory ought to keep playing for how ever long it takes 700 songs to play; at least a day or two correct?

I start Spotify when I wake up and then when I return to the house aprox. 8-10 hours later, Spotify has stopped.

I do not have premium on this account.  Is this my problem?  Does Spotify cut-off after a certain amount of time with the free subscription?

Again, thanks for your help.  You would think my 17 and 15 year old would help their mother with this, but NOOOOO....so thank you Peter

I'm not really sure, I would have thought it would keep streaming until you told it to stop! If you have a free account, are you using playlist radio instead of actually playing the tracks in the playlist? When you get back to it, does the iTouch show any error messages?

Hey Peter ~ Ok the following is what I have seen and done. I promise if we can't get it fixed after this, I will leave you alone. You have been so helpful and I totally appreciate it...
1) I went ahead and purchased premium for this account
2) I made a playlist with 700 songs on MY account, then followed each account and sent playlist to the iTouch account.
Does the playlist have to sink? What does available off-line mean?
3) I clicked on shuffle but I did NOT click the repeat because that did not seem to affect the whole playlist. Maybe I am wrong?
4) iTouch Spotify played for 5 hours straight I know of. When I look at iTouch there are no error messages, it's just off as is the spotify app.

I am now wondering if the iTouch might loose its wifi signal and that is what is shutting it off?
Again, any help you can give me will be so helpful. Especially the silly easy questions for you which I don't understand......
thank you thank you thank you

It sounds like the iPod Touch might be going into a low power state when you aren't using it for so long.

Let me see if I can get some staff input on this since I don't have one of the devices to play with 🙂

OK I give in. I'm sorry but my curiosity has got the better of me now 🙂 Do feel free to tell me to mind my own business but why do you even want to play music continuously even when there is no one around to listen to it?

I do it in house just so if there is anyone around they always have something to listen to haha 🙂

My guy lives in an upscale condo and they are a co-op or something. Anyway, "they" (the people who live in this building) want to have music playing through the halls all the time.....I can not even remember what they did before this so don't ask me....one of the tenants has an OLD iPod original you know with the dial and all. This person downloaded the iPod with music but he doesn't have very good musical taste, and then of course everyone was tired of the songs. So, my guy asks me about spotify and pandora, streaming music for free. Which brings us to this problem of still not being able to keep the music on the building for when someone walks through. They don't want to have spend a bunch of money on iTunes either to get songs on the device; free free free. David and I still ended up purchasing premium for spotify because I thought this would solve all the problems.
Again I believe spotify is losing its wifi connection and is turning off or something. My daughter listens to spotify all night long in bed even when she is asleep the music keeps playing, from her iPhone 4. I play spotify in the car from my iPhone 4. This just doesn't make since to me. In theory this all should work. Don't you think????
My son just gave me directions on how to download "free" music. I'll probably go to jail for doing this though....lol......
I don't know.... Thanks again....if you think of something, let me know 🙂

Wow, that's what I call service to the community 🙂 I know Peter has escalated this to the techie folk so hopefully something can be sorted out for you.

Hey Joe
I didn't realize someone else had jumped into this crazy conversation until I had already pushed send....I hope this keeping people at least amused. I try to throw in some humor where I can :))
Nice to meet you !

Good to meet you too 🙂  I don't usually jump in but my curiosity was killing me 🙂

Is the account that's streaming Spotify on the iPod Touch only used for that one streaming purpose? If your daughter or you, for example, are using the same account, streaming from one device will pause streaming on all others using the account.

There's a couple of other things I can think of that would pause streaming:

1. Losing WiFi connection, as you mentioned. Does the WiFi router get turned off at any time, maybe? Is your WiFi known to disconnect/have problems occasionally (I know mine at home used to)?

2. If the iPod is running off battery only (not a dock), I think the "less than 20% battery remaining" message that appears could pause streaming, although I can't immediately test that. Edit: just noticed you said it was connected to a power source. Is that power source always connected/turned on?

kimbercliffo - Also, have you tried making that playlist 'Available Offline'? If not, please try that.

Once all the music is downloaded, head to 'Settings' in the app and make the app offline. Now the app is offline and the tracks are downloaded, WiFi shouldn't be a problem. It should (in theory) play consistently until the end of the playlist.

Let us know how you get on!

Who's your Spotify Star?

Adam sorry for the delay in my response but I have been out of town
We have tried everything but spotify will NOT play without stopping; after 4 or 5 hours, it just goes off. I have tested the iTouch with wifi and no wifi and saved playlists and offline (everything offline) and I am just stumped. In theory this ought to work. I have paid for premium. iTouch has its own power source. Constant wifi or offline capabilities. Maybe it doesn't work with an iTouch. I don't know but I do know if I am paying for premium I want my spotify to play continually without complications.
Maybe this will not work....I have the iTouch hooked up to a power source and then to speakers which play music through out my building. I do not want to purchase tons of music on iTunes to play music, I want to pay $9.99 a month with unlimited music playing in my building all the time. Do you think this is even possible with the iTouch? I don't know, I'm about to give up....please help Adam....thanks again for all your help...:-)

I am also running into this issue.  I have an itouch that is plugged into a power source, and is plugged into a stereo input to (theoretically) stream a large playlist continuously throughout the entire day (and sometimes into the evening) in my office.

It is quite frustrating that despite paying the premium fee, I am often having to kickstart the app.  It stops several times a day -- no real rhyme or reason -- and when it does, it shows the track that it was just playing (or getting ready to play), but the 'progress bar' for the track is empty with no 'track forward' or 'back track' arrors on either side.

I was wondering if Spotify has a timeout that is built into the app -- i.e. after several hours it shuts off to avoid paying royalties on content that may not actually be getting 'heard' at the moment (the way Pandora will ask you if you are still listening.)

Would love for someone from Spotify to clarify this. It is making me reconsider my subscription.

Ottoportland
I have not heard anything back in a very long time from the spotify peeps. We actually ARE going to be unsubscribing from Premium on this account. I still have my personal account which I share with my daughter; teenagers tend to turn off their devices and aback on again etc etc so she never had this problem.
My son found some commercial free apps but they did not stay on long at all.
I have given up UNLESS some spotify person wants to tell us what to do.
I do love my spotify though and being to listening in my car.
Adios and good night.

@ottoportland - there's no timeout feature built into any of the apps so Spotify shouldn't be cutting out if the play queue still has tracks to play.

@kimbercliffo - Is it an older iPod at all? Is it running iOS 5 by any chance? If so, that's what I use and it does have a tendency to crash/stop working more often now than it did when I bought it, I guess because the apps on it are designed mainly for iOS 6.

Try closing every open app (double-click Home button to bring up a list > hold-click each app to close), then reinstalling Spotify. Does that then run smoother?

what to do?

@Nic2012 You will have received an automated reply each time with a case number and possibly directing yyou back to the community or to the FAQs. If you reply to one of those automated responses, a consultant will get back to you, usually within 24 hours.

Turning to your issue, what does your subscription status show in your account overview? What device, iOS version and spotify version are you using? What doesn't work exactly?
