Spotify Stops Playing Short Playlist Randomly if Spotify Not on Screen

If I go to another app or turn off the display, Spotify will stop playing in the middle of a song, not immediately but randomly.  After returning to the app, pressing play restarts the song from the beginning.

Also, this only happens when I try to listen to a shorter playlist.  It will keep playing if I listen to a playlist that is 12 hours long, but if I try to listen to one that has just the minimum 15 songs or a little longer, it will do the random stop.  In frustration, I sometimes wonder if this could be a "feature" designed keep me from conveniently listening to fewer songs randomly so that I will upgrade to Premium.

I have already tried restarting phone, reinstalling Spotify, and making sure no power saving settings are affecting Spotify.

The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far are very good. We'd like to add a few more.

It's a good idea to give these steps a go and run a clean reinstall. This one is more thorough than the usual one.

Could you try with another account on the same device to check if the issue persists?

Would you mind letting us know if this happens across devices or only on your phone? 

On another note, could you ask a friend or a relative to log in to their account in your phone to check if the same happens using a different account?
