What just changed with Spotify?

My laptop is logged into my Spotify account and so is my iPhone.  The laptop plays the music through my home system and I control it via the Spotify app on my phone.  This has worked perfectly for years.

In the past two days, I have not been able to just jump to another track in my playlist from the iPhone (by clicking it on the playlist).

Now, it operates more like Free Spotify (wothout the ads or mandatory Shuffle Play), where I am locked into the order of the playlist.  The only way to change it on the fly is to add a song to the queue =, but that had added an extra step.

I pay for Premium so I can jump around in my music freely, no matter how many devices are connected at the time.  Whatever change has just been made has restricted that freedom.

Any suggestions?

Hey @EC1225.

Thanks for getting in touch with us about this. We'll be glad to help you out 🙂

Just to confirm, what happens exactly when you are trying to click on another song? Does it simply not recognise the action? Also, is this happening just with playlists, or is it also happening with albums? Further, have you tried to play it through your iPhone without it being connected to your home system or your laptop?

Once we have this information, we will be able to help you troubleshoot this issue.

In the meantime, would you mind performing a clean reinstall by following the steps outlined here? This can solve many common problems that our users experience.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

I havent tried with albums but, in a playlist, if I click another song later or earlier in the playlist, it just plays the next song in the playlist.

If I have the playlist shuffled, it plays the song in the queue.  But it does not play the song I want to jump to.

If Spotify is not open anywhere else, everything functions normally. So, yes...if I am only using my iphone, and spotify is not open on my laptop, I can jump to any song in the playlist.

This is a new devepment in the past 2 weeks or so. Something to so with the recent Family plan?

I will miss this function as the reason I pay for Premium is to have that control.  It was great to have my songs playing via my home automation laptop, through the home speakers, and be able to jump to any song I want in the playlist.  Now I have to take the extra time to add the song I want to the queue then hit the next track button.

Thanks.

Hey @EC1225.

Thanks for clarifying all those details for us. We just have a few more questions so we can really get to the bottom of this 🙂

First, could you confirm that you have tried a clean reinstall on both your phone and your laptop?

Could you also give it a try outside of a playlist and see if you can select a song freely in an album, for example?

Also, to confirm, is this only happening when you have the shuffle function on?

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

I have done a clean instal (deleted anything containing "spotify" from my system) and reinstalled Spotify.

The problem persists in both playlists and albums, shuffle on or off.

Note: If I have the Spotfy App open on my Amazon FireTV stick and jump to another track using the Spotify App on the phone, it works fine—just like how the desktop app used to respond.

Also, If the desktop (laptop) app is also is active, while listening on the Amazon FireTV stick and conrtolling via the phone, it shows the correct track.

It is only when I am listening via the desktop Spotify app that it stubbornly plays the next song in the shuffled or unshuffled playlist no mater which song I jump to in the list (playlist or album) from the iPhone app. (if I jump via the desktop app, it woks fine).

Hey @EC1225.

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing us with such detailed information 🙂

We noticed that your Mac's OS and Spotify app version are out-of-date. Would you mind updating them to the latest version and seeing if that fixes things?

Let us know how it goes!
