Hey guys,
We're currently working on an update to the "Spotify for iOS 4" app to instead be a Spotify for iOS 5 app which will have full support for iPad and a ton more features than the current "Spotify for iOS 4" has, like Radio for both iPad and iPhone, Discover for the iPhone etc.
This update will drop support for iOS 4 however, but we have very few users on iOS 4 compared to iOS 5.
Hey again guys,
Seems like the Apple already solved this issue for us with their new AppStore feature, where you'll be able to download an older version of any app if your device is running for example iOS 5, which is incompatible with Spotify version 0.7.4, so you'll be able to download 0.7.2 instead where iOS 5 is supported, by just downloading "Spotify" you'll get a dialogue asking if you want to download an older version instead.

This is awesome news, hope this makes you guys happy as well!
Conrad,
I don't know if you have already tried this, or if it is possible in Austrailia, but it worked for me here in the US on iOS 5.1.1 and i had the same issue.
Go into iTunes on your computer and into the app store. Find the spotify app and install it on iTunes, even though it is for iOS 7. Do not have your iPad connected at this time. Once it installs, go to your iPad. (Do not connect to your computer!) Go to the app icon and find the spotify app and install it. It should give you the option to install the older more compatible version.
Like I said, this worked for me for iOS 5.1.1 in the US, I don't know if it will work for an older iOS version or for another country, but it is worth a try.
Good luck!
As I understand it, the older iOS versions are no longer suppoerted and your only option now is to use the app for iOS 4.
...bacause it's a perfectly acceptable way to treat paying customers, by obseleting their 2 year old hardware with NO WARNING and providing only a garbage ancient version of the app they're paying for by way of "compensation".
Good bye spotify. It's been fun.
I would guess that there's a point where it doesn't make commercial sense to support older hardware and operating systems instead of concentrating resources on current platforms. At least we do have the option not to renew our subscriptions if our devices are no longer supported.
I agree jwylot. After 5 years or so, I might be less annoyed.
Two years, however, is a disgustingly short time for a £500 bit of hardware for a service we're paying £120 a year for.

That's great news. Thanks for the update 🙂

Great news! Thanks.
As far as I am aware, you should still be able to install the last compatible version of the App Store.
Does that not work for you?

Strange, I thought it was meant to just offer to give you the last compatible version (since current Spotify is iOS 6+ only) - although reading Apple's release notes it does say "redownload" which as you said might be causing the issue.
Let me see if I can get someone to check this out for you.

Could you please try installing Spotify through iTunes and syncing it to your device?
I am having the exact same issue.... I wanted to refresh and restore my iPad.... I made a backup before I did this... but now that I have restoed my iPad to my previous backup... it will not install Spotify and I'm a Spotify Premium subscriber... all was fine before I decided to restore my Reset & Restore my iPad....
Can you please help me as I use Spotify on my iPad one to drive me Hi-Fi system.
Regards,
Anthony
I too, am having the same issues as the other people who have posted here. I had not installed the spotify app on my iPod previously, so I don't have the option to get a previous version, only the new version, so I continually get the message to update my device to iOS 6, which it is not compatible with. I just signed up for the premium version and it really wouldn't be worth it if I can't listen to it on my iPod too.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
SOLUTION! 🙂
Hey friends, I've found a solution that helped me with my problem.
I have an iPod Touch 3G (iOS 5.1.1) and couldn't install the Spotify App (requires iOS 6 or above)!
I followed these steps: (iTunes on latest Version)
1) Jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.14b2 http://www.iphone-news.org/2012/07/05/redsn0w-0-9-14b2-als-download-verfuegbar-39827/ .
2) Open "Cydia" and add the source: "http://sinfuliphonerepo.com/".
3) Download "AppSync for iOS 4.x-6.x" in Cydia.
4) Download the latest compatible version of Spotify App (for iOS 5.1.1 its version 0.7.2) here: http://www.idwaneo.org/appsnew/#.Usf2D_TuLB9
5) Drag the downloaded version into Itunes so you can see the Spotify App symbol in your Apps.
6) Connect your device (iPod Touch 3G) and synchronize it. The Spotify App should get installed on your device.
I don't assume responsibility for any problems. I recommend to always check downloaded files with an anti virus programm.
I hope it will help you as much as it helped me!
Happy New Year!
I cant see what is available in the iTunes US store, but I know that in Australia there is no iOS4 or iOS5 version of the Spotify app. Only the iOS6 version is available from Spotify on iTunes. So I do not consider this issue resolved at all. Someone on this stream suggested jailbreaking your device to use Spotify and that is not an acceptable solution. My solution is simply to install Pandora on my iPad1, but I would prefer to be using Spotify if they would make the app available to iOS5 users.
