iPhone 4 (version 7.1.2) PAINFULLY slow with Spotify APP - Help?

Hi all,

I've been using Spotify on my phone now for a few months and I've got to say that the playback is really horrendous...

Songs cut out on average 2-5 times near-ish the beginning

Changing between songs takes far too long

Scrolling is very slow

The app restarts itself for reasons I'm not too sure, after a song pauses itself for a few seconds.

I've been deleting a lot of my synced tracks to free up space on my phone to see if that helps, I have no music synced from iTunes on my phone and I have 4 other apps (facebook messenger, snapchat, giffgaff and duolingo). So there isn't a huge amount of space taken up on anything other than Spotify.

Is anyone able to help me out with possibly fixing this problem? Maybe it's just the version of Spotify is too advanced for my phone or software version (I've got the most recent update as of now).
