itunes playlist songs disappear

a few weeks ago i had a playlist from itunes uploaded to the spotify app on my iphone.  everything was working just fine, was able to access the songs on my itunes playlist through spotify whenever i wanted to.  i wanted to update some playlists and i had things all screwed up with multiple playlist so i deleted them all and walked away for a week.  this past friday i tried to add all of my playlists from itunes to spotify again.  all playlists showed up in spotify with the correct number of songs listed underneath them all but when i click on the playlists, no songs, just the Want to add songs to this playlist? information.  i was able to get some of them to sync last night but i come back to my phone now and all of those synced songs are gone, all playlist have the want to add message again.  both iphone and windows desktop are on the same wifi network.  the songs are in my playlist on the app on my desktop so why would they have all disappeared from my iphone?!?!  if i play one of the songs on the app on my desktop and then click to listen on iphone when it shows up on the app on my phone i get the song not downloaded message.  but i never had any of my songs downloaded to my phone and i had them playing from the playlist on my iphone last night, doesn't make a bit of sense to me.  what am i doing wrong?
