Alexa account linking gives error

Alexa account linking gives error

My Spotify and Alexa accounts were previously linked and working , however, I’d accidentally tapped ‘Forget device’ for the Echo we use as a speaker. At the advice of another forum, I disabled the Spotify skill in Alexa and re-enabled it. However, -account linking now appears to be broken.

When I follow the instructions for linking my Spotify account to the Alexa skill I receive an error.

In the Alexa app…

I enable the Spotify skill

I tap ‘Settings’ then ‘Link Account’

It prompts the Spotify app to open, which in turn opens a browser window with the text ‘Illegal scope’ in the top left corner.

Checking my account details in the Spotify app, the app shows this error alert…

Something went wrong

The operation couldn't be completed. (com.spotify.connectivity.oauth error

5.)

I’ve tried…

- loggings out and back in again in the Spotify app and browser.

- disabling and reenabling the Alexa skill for Spotify

- quitting and restarting both apps

Any suggestions for what to try welcome. Thanks!

It sounds like there is an issue with the connection between your Spotify account and the Alexa skill. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Check that your Spotify account is still active and that you are logged in to the correct account.

  2. Make sure that your Alexa app and Spotify app are both up-to-date.

  3. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your Spotify account in the Alexa app by going to the Alexa app > Settings > Music & Podcasts > Link New Service > Spotify.

  4. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your Spotify account in the Spotify app by going to the Spotify app > Settings > Connect to a Device > Alexa.

  5. Check if there is an issue with the Alexa skill on the Alexa app, it could be under Maintenance, if that's the case, wait for it to be fixed.

  6. Check if your Alexa device is registered with the correct Amazon account.

  7. If none of the above solutions work, contact Spotify and/or Alexa support for further assistance. They will be able to help you troubleshoot the issue and provide additional support.

It's important to note that sometimes issues with the account linking may be caused by a temporary problem with the servers of the service, so try again later.

Thanks! Checked 1, 3, 4 and 6 of your suggestions but no joy.

Tried uninstalling both the Spotify app and Alexa app completely and reinstalling.

The Spotify app asked to link to Alexa on opening  and this seemed to fix it!
