Android Wear Spotify controls do not appear while using Spotify

Hi, I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but my Spotify controls no longer appear on my watch.  I can open the application on my watch and choose an album to play without issue, but once it starts playing the controls do not appear at all.  Has anyone else experienced this?  For more details, I'm using the LG G Watch R running Android Wear version 1.4.0.2576000, paired with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus on Android version 6.0.1.  My Spotify app is running version 5.2.0.885.
