Android app will not advance song when playing in background

This is pretty ridiculous. No one loads spotify and then WATCHES the album art. We want to listen to music while we navigate with Google Maps, or exercise and track it with our favorite fitness app, or whatever. but if the screen goes dark or another app is visible the song won't switch untill I switch back to Spotify app in the foreground. What a SUPREME HASSLE. Once you get a stable app version, remind me to NEVER UPDATE Spotify. as if 5/22/2017 I have the latest Android verion that T-Mobile offers and the latest Spotify app.

Anybod have a fix for this? Help is exteremely hard to find on this.
