Bluetooth crackling /Normalize Volume option

I've been trying to use my Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Android 7.0) to work with my Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones over bluetooth.. Connection to my device is fine, as is playback via any other app, but Spotify playback results in extreme crackling/static on all tracks.  The only way to prevent this is to ENABLE volume normalization in Spotify settings.  I'd rather not have to do this, is there any workaround?

I have exactly the same phone/headphones and it doesn't happen to me. //do you have any of the Samsung power saving plans enabled? Is spotify in the unmonitored apps listed at the bottom of the battery page?
