Can't control the app from notifications or lock screen

I'm on the latest Android 7.0 update as of 22.04.18 but this is an ongoing issue for many months.

I can't skip, play, pause, or control volume unless I'm in the app. The player shows on my home screen and notifications but the buttons dont do anything, and the song doesn't update to show me what I'm actually listening to, just whichever song was playing when I left the app.

After a little bit the app turns off but keeps playing the music on whatever device I'm listening on so I can't even stop it unless I reopen the app and reconnect to the device.

I've read every easy fix like turning off battery saver for Spotify, enabling notifications both in the app and in my phine settings, but nothing is working!!!

Does anyone have an answer?? This is very annoying!
