Does spotify give long time users special priviledge?

My Question

I've been using spotify for over a year now. My friend's just hopped on spotify recently. Both of us don't pay for the subscription. He complained that he couldn't choose a particular song to play. When he plays an album, spotify will shuffle it. I remember I once had that problem a long time ago. But somehow, now, I can choose whatever I want to play. It will only shuffle the songs that come after the song I play, sometimes it include songs outside the album or the artist, but whatever, I paid no penny for the service, after all. I'm just asking if the spotify has some sort of priviledges for long time users or not. Why I can choose a particular but my friend cannot?

He just deleted it and reinstalled it, and somehow, now he can choose whatever song to play. Don't really know why, maybe the app just got a few glitches.
