Does spotify save data to the phone's internal storage even though no song was ever downloaded?

I have Spotify on my android phone and I only ever 'Save' songs, never Download, yet it shows 3GB of internal storage used by Spotify. What is this data being stored on my phone by Spotify?

The spotify cache stores details of your account and listening history. It also caches the music you stream to reduce bandwidth should you play the same music again in the future.

I don't have any music saved to my phone for offline use yet Spotify takes up over 3 gigs of saved data plus more in cache . It certainly seems like they are saving music on my phone because of the amount of data that it takes up . I've been wondering what it's actually saving and why does it take up so much room too.
