Google Assistant Can't Open Spotify

Google Assistant Can't Open Spotify

A new problem has started last week when using google voice commands to use Spotify. This is using a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and a bluetooth connected head unit.

Normally, you activate the assistant and ask 'Play *song* by *artist* on spotify'. Which is then followed by a voice confirmation from the google app along the lines of 'Playing *Song* by *artist* on spotify' - and the music will start playing.

This since last week has stopped working. Now immediately following the voice confirmation that the song will start playing another voice command is played 'Sorry, something went wrong. Please try opening the Spotify app to continue.'

Up until last week it has worked fine for over a year with no issues, regardless of whether the phone is locked or unlocked. All other voice commands work fine, call someone, tell me the weather, traffic info, etc. Only Spotify is having an issue. It appears that somehow google can't open the spotify app anymore. Which is a real pain in the a** when driving!

Cache cleared, uninstalled/reinstalled app, unlinked/linked account again - nothing has helped.

On my pixel 2 it works really intermittently. Sometimes it will work great. Othertimes google assistant will recognize what song I want to play but spotify just doesnt play it. It launches the app and nothing happens. It seems like force closing spotify fixes the issue but I'm not really sure.

Thanks for the feedback and advice. Tried force close too, doesn't help. Atleast it happens for you intermittently. For me it's all the time.

Running Oreo on Moto Z2 Force... This is driving me nuts.  I have tried all known combinations in the universe of changing Google permissions, changing Spotify permissions, changing Spotify settings, clearing caches, uninstalling and reinstalling both apps, etc.  Occasionally I get it to run without the "Something went wrong" but then back to square one...nothing is actually fixing the problem.  The music still plays regardless...just the verbal error message is annoying.  I switched from iPhone to android recently and so far loving it because having an iPhone is like being locked in a box with no windows thinking you are in the future but in reality you are years behind in terms of what a smart phone can do...but I will say it just "worked" when it came to using Siri and controlling the phone and other apps including Spotify.  I'm not sure if this is a Spotify issue or a Google issue, but we are not the only ones and it seems both companies have been ignoring the problem for a long time.  I would switch to Google Music in a heartbeat but they don't offer a student discount and I'm getting Spotify with included Hulu for $5.  Ugh.
