Headphone track controls not working consistently

My Question or Issue

 Track controls for headphones only work when I restart the phone. After app loses focus the controls stop working and I have to restart phone again. Rebooting the app doesn't work. I've tried updating phone/app, reinstalling, clearing cache/data, logging back in, and using other phones. Issue persists but other apps like Google play work fine.
