Music stops when using any other app or going to home screen

I've been a premium user for a few months and it has always worked great until a few weeks ago. Now, when using Spotify, I am unable to use my phone for anything else if I want to listen to music. I start music, but when I try to go to my homescreen or switch to another app to do anything, the music starts stuttering horribly and then stops altogether until I go back to the Spotify app, and music automatically continues playing from wherever it stuttered out and stopped at. I am using a nexus 6p, so far I've logged out and back in, turned airplane mode on and back off, and completely uninstalled and reinstalled the app (all trouble shooting suggestions I found that might work) and so far nothing has helped. I really loved the app until this started and would like to figure out a fix so I don't have to cancel my subscription. Any help with this would be very much appreciated!
