My Question or Issue

The Android system night light and extra dim options are both greyed out in Android with the text 'Unavailable' when in some screens in Spotify.

It seems to happen when Spotify is playing a video (including ones that autoplay a preview as soon as you open the app) and sometimes in the now playing view. It doesn't always happen though and some screens like the library are never an issue.

If the options had been turned on, they turn off when they're greyed out, so the blue light / extra brightness comes back. Then the settings go back to being on when you quit the app or switch to an unaffected screen like the library.

I don't know if this is maybe intended because it disables the settings (which change colour etc) when there's a visual thing to look at, but when you're trying to put music on in a dark room late at night it really sucks, not to mention it seems odd to completely remove the option from the user?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I can try and screen record it happening if that's useful. Thanks!

Hey there @shiftypistachio,

Thanks for reaching out!

Just to confirm, has this worked properly in the past or has this always been the case? Have you already tried performing a clean reinstall of the app to see if that makes any difference?

It'd be very helpful if you could send over a screen recording of how things look from your end so that we can take a look. You can attach it to your next response or upload it to another platform like YouTube or Google Drive and send a link to it. Make sure to hide any personal or sensitive information, and to give it the relevant permissions if you decide to upload it somewhere else.

Lastly, let us know the exact Spotify version you're currently running.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

Hi @Novy, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

I'm not sure exactly when the problem started, but it was no earlier than when I got my current phone, 12th of Feb. My last phone didn't have a built-in blue light filter though (I was using a third-party app) so I wouldn't have noticed either way. I've tried uninstalling + reinstalling, and it hasn't fixed it.

I've attached a screen record of it happening in the now playing view - that's the only place it's been happening since I've been trying to recreate the problem so I hope that's OK. I'm pretty sure the only other place was the home screen but it doesn't happen there consistently.

My Spotify version is 9.0.30.642

Thanks for the response @shiftypistachio.

We really appreciate all of the details that you provided, as well as the video you kindly attached.

We had a look at the behavior, but couldn't reproduce it from our end and we didn't find any other related reports from users of the issue you described.

What comes to mind is to disable any battery-saving settings you might have toggled, check and disable any third-party apps on your device which could be interfering with the display settings or try changing the themes on your phone. This is in order to test if any of these would make a difference when using Spotify.

However, if none of the above work, since you mentioned that this started no earlier than when you got your current phone and you've already performed some troubleshooting, including a clean reinstall of the app, it would be best to either reach out to your phone manufacturer for further assistance or possibly go to Motorola's forum and do a search if there are any similar reports.

Thanks again for the info and the Community's here in the meantime if you need help with anything else.

Take care!

Hi Ivelina,

Thanks for your reply! I tried changing the theme and checking through background apps but the issue still happens. I had a quick search of the moto forums too and didn't find anyone else with the same problem.

It's not a massive problem as I can always go back to 3rd party night light apps (I just checked and the one I was using before still works fine), and I might do a post on the moto forums at some point as you suggested.

On a random side note, when I was having another check for other people with the same issue, Google AI cited this singular post (probably where I asked if disabling the night light was intended in my first post) to say that it is intentional by Spotify, which I thought was a funny first-hand example of how incredibly reliable it is..

Thank you both for your time!
