My Question or Issue
I don't know whether this is a new feature, but try to check app permissions for autostart enabling/disabling
I'd say this is still a serious issue that affects Spotify users everyday. Some if it is just annoyance and some is causing issues in work or other personal situations because music starts playing on the Bluetooth device without user control.
Regardless if this is an issue with the Bluetooth standard or a how Android handles media playback. It's my opinion that this is such a irritating issue that it's building recentment targeted towards Spotify. Since Spotify is what the enduser is experiencing.
Spotify had always been great building a great user experience with the required features.
So creating an app setting where automatic play can be disabled by the user is in Spotify's best interest. Regardless of reason for underlying issue
Hey folks,
Thanks for reaching out here. We appreciate the feedback and have passed it on to our developers.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a solution for this at the moment because the way the app behaves when connected to Bluetooth devices, including car stereo systems, varies based on the device involved. These actions are a result of how the specific Bluetooth device is designed to interact with the Spotify API. However, we’re constantly optimizing our app, so this behavior might change in future updates.
For now, we recommend checking for possible firmware updates for your devices and if that doesn't help - to reach out to the manufacturer for further help with the Bluetooth configuration.
Thanks for your understanding.
If this is considered "expected behavior" after thousands of users have asked that there is at least a way to turn it off, then maybe it's time to move on to a different music app. Clearly, spotify if having issues engineering thier app. It's been years now, and the only suggested "fix", is that this is expected to happen. Well, how come other music apps have the option? I have been a spotify premium subscriber for several years, and slowly my playlists get shorter and shorter as individual songs no longer become playable for one reason or another. I started using Tital, and what do you know, it doesn't auto play, and all of the songs spotify lost access to are on there. Not to mention they have a high quality dolby atmos optional subscription, which sounds great. Sorry spotify, you seem to have lost your way over that last 4 or 5 years.
This fix no longer works for me on Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

That is exactly what I have done. I have switched over to Apple Music. Spotify's app behavior with Bluetooth and Spotify Connect embedded in the car is frustrating. The volume of posts on the internet (and this forum) on this topic leaves me shaking my head. I don't think anyone on the Spotify app team owns a car with bluetooth.
I have the same problem. This is not a problem with the OS because other music players do not behave like this.
Same deal. I don't use Spotify in the car, I use locally installed music with a BT adapter simply because the phone belongs to my work and Spotify uses mobile data (reported to my boss). I NEVER opened Spotify this morning, but used my local music played when I took my car... I got home and into meetings... working... and suddenly Spotify is open and playing music! I guess I am still too close to the plug-in BT adapter, which is still on even though the car is off. No matter what, restart device, force stop... it just keeps going!
I am just using the "free" version. I would feel really bad if I paid for this service. If I want the damn thing open, I will open it!! Sure, resume playing maybe, but just open whenever it wants?? Sad
I think this problem is enough for me to cancel my subscription.. it has been over 3 years now and your developers couldn't fix this issue.. sorry but this is a real failure.
Just desable nearby option on your buds. Helpd me!
I have a Galaxy S10 plus and it is 2022 and this is still a problem. Spotify starts up every time I turn my car on or connect to any Bluetooth device. Even when I'm trying to listen to other applications it will play at the same time. But, I think I have finally found a solution. I put the app into deep sleep. In my phone it is under the menu of battery and device care. You hit the plus sign on the deep sleeping apps page and add it. That way the app can never starts without you intentionally opening it. It will never receive notifications or Auto anything.
New car, new phone but issue is back!
I have a Samsung S22 with Android 13. When I turn on my car, Spotify starts streaming over Bluetooth to my car audio.
All this time, all these posts, and still nothing from Spotify? 😞 S22+ and brand new car, so please don't blame "everything else"!
My girlfriend and I spend half our drive fighting with Spotify, which constantly wants start, even when we are not doing anything. It is incredibly frustrating, and I also have considered canceling my family subscription I am so frustrated.
Your response was unprofessional. I too am really annoyed that Spotify automatically starts when I restart my phone and even when I'm watching TV. Of I turn up my ear buds Spotify turns on over the top of my show. That's not a good App.
i don't know why this is so hard for people to understand. There are many users reporting this issue, so there must be some merit to why many of us would not want their music to start up automatically every time we get in the car. I get in the car and Android Auto starts up automatically, which is fine. It brings up my map and allows me to choose from different apps whether i want to hear spotify or perhaps soundcloud or pandora or another source such as am/fm/xm radio. But i should be able to chose whether or not i want the music to start playing automatically or not. in fact, there is a setting in android auto supposedly to disable the music from automatically starting. but with the spotify app, this disable feature is ignored. no other app does this. so i can be listening to the radio or to another app like soundcloud or pandora when i turn off my car. it doesn't matter what the last thing was being used. every time i turn it back on, spotify starts playing. and i do use spotify sometimes in the car usually when my kids are in the car. so when i get in the car by myself i don't want to hear Frozen sound track or Moana or other kids songs. Even if i kill the spotify process on my phone, when my car connects to the phone, spotify starts up and starts to play, "LET IT GOOOO...."
I have seen the same issue for years and a few times I have disabled but when I change phones it comes back up.
If I am not mistaken, disabling the "Allow App Notifications" under Settings and Permissions blocks the auto start with Android Auto
Ita been more than 3 years since the first post. And a single f...was given to this day forward.
Why deezer doesnt automatically start? Or youtube? Or any OTHER APP AT ALL.
