Playback stops on multiple devices

Playback stops on multiple devices

For the last few months I've been having this issue where Spotify will spontaneously stop playing music, including in the middle of a song. Information about my setup:

Device Configurations:

Connected devices: 1 - 3 desktop/PCs connected, 1 Google Home Max, 1 Android device

Phone in use: Pixel 3a XL, running Android 10, often connected to a bluetooth headset (Sennheiser Momentum 2.0)

Spotify account: Student premium

Song source: Both streaming and downloaded songs

I have noticed that when I'm playing music on my Google Home Max and Pixel 3a XL that it has a tendency to stop playing music spontaneously without offering a crash report or other notification of software failure. The music simply stops, and I must resume it myself. I have tried waiting it out to see if it comes back, it does not.

Incident Recording:

While writing this up, my music stopped playing on my Pixel 3a XL and exhibited the issue I'm describing, and I took the opportunity to record some specifics. The device was locked, connected to wifi and using a bluetooth headset. The Spotify notification is still visible, however the song progress bar has stopped moving (showing that it's not a lack of audio output only) but the play/pause button still believes the device is playing a song (button has the || symbol). Taping on the notifications progress bar gave me an additional notifcation indicating "Spotify Starting..." followed by my song resuming. Interestingly, the song's progress bar is still not moving on the original notifcation despite the song having began resuming. The song I was listening to was "Hamburg by Mt. Wolf", which was downloaded to my device in the highest quality available, and it crashed at 3:19 into the song. I also noticed that this progress bar does not update when the song changes. I've included screenshots of the moment the crash occured, and some time after showing the progress bar is still at 3:19 despite being on another song.

I am not sure if this is an application crash, or some other background issue (e.g. Spotify Connect sending a stop music command), but I have included the relevant information I could think of.

----

My apologies for placing this is the wrong location, but I couldn't figure out how to add it to ongoing issues.

Hey @rndmranger,

Thanks for reaching out and giving us detailed info about the issue!

Have you tried doing a clean reisntall? If not, please keep in mind that afterwards you will have to download your songs for offline ussage again.

You can also follow these steps to ensure Spotify can play in the background:

  • Mobile Settings> Apps> Spotify> Permissions. Allow everything you see there.
  • Mobile settings> Apps> Spotify> Battery> Optimize battery usage> select top All (not optimized for apps)> Spotify> disable.
  • Last step - restart the phone.

Let us know how it goes 🙂
