Problem using Android phone app and Windows desktop app together

My Android phone name goes gray on the Windows desktop app's device list when the phone screen turns off, and the Windows app can no longer control playback.  I can keep listening on my phone and controlling the playback from my phone, but I would like to be able to control playback from the desktop app since it's easier to use.  The same does not happen with my iPhone.  I'm using an LG G4, running stock Android 5.1.
