It's not available in any music app at the moment. After doing some research, it looks like it has to be added to the app by the developer as separate buttons. Unfortunately, this will also take the place of an icon already on the interface, which is also necessary. Usually a rewind or fast forward is just a long press on the next and previous buttons, but I'm not sure of the complexity and if that's even possible in android auto.
I don't have Android Auto, and when I replied to your comment I forgot this thread was about Android Auto, lol. Sorry.
If it's any help, I've tried both TuneIn and Podcast Addict when casting to Chromecast and they both allow me to FF/RW when screen's off or running in the background if I use PBMC xposed module for mapping those actions to physical keys (volume keys). Not all apps allow that, actually, I contacted Podcast Addict's developer 3 days ago and told him I wanted background control of FF/RW for chromecast and he managed to implement it the following day (yes, on Sunday!!)
I really need this function on Spotify when I'm listening to music on my phone.
Please please add this soon. I listen to long songs (about 8mins each) in long car rides. Have fast forward buttons on my Jetta's wheel, they don't FF when held down. Try hold the FF button on my touchscreen? nothing. Moving the green seek bar? nothing.
It seems like such an easy feature to impliment, and not being able to use it each day really sucks.
