Spotify app nail-bitingly slow on Android

Spotify app nail-bitingly slow on Android

So since a few months my Spotify app has gotten extremely slow. It's super annoying, it takes ages to load my list of albums and when I scroll too fast through this list  (before all the thumbnails are loaded) the app crashes. Same goes for playlists.

When I try to search a song via the search bar, it just keeps loading and loading until it says there is a problem. When I finally get a song to play and I open the menu to share it or save in a playlist, the menu won't open. It always says there is something wrong with my internet, which isn't true. I tried this with WiFi and 4G, same problem. All other apps which use internet work great and load very fast.

When I want to share a song with a friend, it takes me sometimes 15 minutes to get the search function to work, to get the song to play and then to get the menu loaded where I can click on search. Kinda contradicts all this advertising saying it's so easy to share music with friends through Spotify....

Clearly something is wrong with the app. I see a lot of posts about this issue, but no recent ones. They all lead towards the use of an SD card, which I also do. But I need to do this otherwise I just don't have the storage space to download my offline songs.

The phone is a Sony Xperia Z2 running Android 6.0.1. Does anyone know how to fix this? If there isn't an easy fix I'll try to reinstall the app, but with 500+ offline songs I kinda want to avoid that, takes ages to download them.
