My Question or Issue

I use Microsoft teams and a Bluetooth headset. Everytime I receive a teams message spotify starts playing music. I have to pause the music or shut down spotify each time. Then when the next message comes in it starts again. I am using Bose NC 700 headphones. They are connected to both my laptop and my phone. I also have teams on both my phone and laptop.

Hi @RockinMusicCity,

Thanks for reaching out.

This is quite strange. Since you mentioned you have a Samsung phone, check if you have any Bixby routines in place as those are known to cause strange occurrences like this. There also might be something in the phone settings changing the behaviour when Bluetooth devices are connected, so that may be worth checking too.

Hope this helps.

I've checked Bixby and don't see anything obvious in the settings related
to Bluetooth devices.

Hey @RockinMusicCity ,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

We think this might be related to the permissions that are enabled for teams on your device. This kind of behavior can be triggered by other 3rd party apps that try to initialize music playback, which has special notification access, allowing it to launch Spotify automatically.

In that sense, would you mind searching in your phone's settings for "Notification access"? (It should be under Apps > three-dot menu on the right> Special access > Notification access). There, disable the notification permissions for teams or any other app you might consider would want audio playback control and let us know how it goes.

If this behavior persists afterwards, then we'd like to gather some additional info:

  • When this happens, is Spotify playing content in the background or does the app just open and start playing?
  • Does this happen when using both your mobile device and laptop and both are connected to your headset or does it happen when using just one of those devices?
  • Did you notice if this happens when not using the headset?

We'll be on the lookout!

Teams did not have notification access but Google, Galaxy6 Watch Manager, One UI Home, and Smart View did have notification Access.  I've disabled them and I will let you know if it happens again.

behavior persists:

1. When it happens spotify opens and starts playing

2. Yes while using both my laptop and device connected to my headset Or while just using my phone.

3. I have only noticed it happening while using the headset.

Appreciate the cooperation @RockinMusicCity!

Would you mind testing if the same thing would happen by playing music from a different media app on your phone and laptop?

As you're using a Samsung phone, the Developer options menu lets you configure system behaviors to improve app performance so there's one more thing that you can try. There's an option called Autostart and you'd possibly have to first enable Developer options in order for the Autostart setting to show up. This article shows how to do that.

Now try looking for Autostart or something similar in the list of options and toggle it off for Spotify so that the app doesn't continue running in the background once you close it.

We hope to hear from you soon and don't hesitate to let us know if you need help with anything else in the meantime.

The same thing does not happen when playing music from a different media
app on my phone.

I turned on Developer options but there is no "Autostart" or the like
anywhere in my settings.

Hey @RockinMusicCity,

Thanks for your reply.

We've noted your report, however, we can't confirm when it will be addressed. In the meantime, you can try reaching out to Samsung support and asking if there're any specific settings on your device that might cause/prevent this behavior.

Keep us posted.

Same issue here. Did you manage to solve it?

S23U and JBL Live 770NC in my case.
