Spotify playing at home pauses other media apps on my Android

Recently I've noticed a problem where the Spotify app on my phone pauses other media apps on my Android phone. When I am driving to work, I'll be playing an audiobook via Hoopla or Smart Audiobook player, and it works fine. Then my wife wakes up at home and launches Spotify on our Echo tap.

Bam...on my Android, a notification pops up that she is playing whatever song, and it pauses my audiobook in my other app (we'll say Hoopla for clarity, but I also noticed it on SmartAudiobook play) on my Android in the car. I press play on my Hoopla and that is fine until my wife's song changes, then Hoopla pauses again, because Spotify has taken over the active media playing job on my phone. 

So, this creates a problem where I have to grab my phone every 3 minutes, open Hoopla and hit play again. My only other option is to put my phone in airplane mode, but then I am out of touch for my ride in to work.
