Spotify stops every time my screen or home locks

Okay so posted a few months ago about my Spotify playing up and repeatedly cutting out. Various things were suggested and various things tried but nothing has worked out long term. 

What I have managed to work out I that it appears to be related to my screen or phone lock, like literally as soon as my screen goes dark the music stops. I go back in to Spotify and press play, it plays and then stops again as soon as screen locks.

Has happened a few times when using other apps too but less worried about that at the moment.

I have actually recently cancelled my Spotify subscription as was frustrated by the unpractical nature of repeatedly having to reopen your phone (I know right, first world problems).

Any ideas as to how to fix this as have enabled background data, WiFi is on all of the time and I still experience this.

What device and android version are you using? What have you tried so far to fix this?
