Spotify stops playing when I change apps. Pixel 2 XL Android 9.0

I just got a shiny new Pixel 2 XL (Verizon, Android 9.0 Pie). I love it!  But whenever I use Spotify it just quits playing the moment I shift to another app or the screen goes off. Which sucks cause Iistening to music in my car is ESSENTIAL to my life on this planet. I've checked all the permisssions, battery saver, etc...nothing seems to help. 

I notice this has been a problem for a while. Is there some new solutions?

Have you tried to reinstall the app yet? You can read here how to do this. If that doesn't help, could you make sure the Battery Save is entirely turned off? We understand you checked the battery saver but we are not sure what you found there.
