When launched with Alexa, music pauses when I unlock my phone

When launched with Alexa, music pauses when I unlock my phone

My Question or Issue

Here is the steps to reproduce the issue :

- I play music using an Alexa voice command through my JBL Authentics 300 connected wifi speaker (it handles voice commands to Alexa direcltly, just like an Echo)

- I unlock my Android Phone screen (where Spotify is installed)

- the music pauses

- I can see the name of the song that was playing in the playback zone of the notification area of android

My hypothesis is :

- At first when the JBL starts playing from Spotify, the stream is controlled by Alexa's connection to Spotify

- Then when I unlock my android phone, it seems the Spotify app takes over on the Playback (since I can then see the song playing in the android notification area) which weirdly causes the music to pause

I feel it must be something of that order since I have noticed other small conflicts between Alexa streaming / Spotify connect. For example, if a song is started through Alexa and I open the Spotify app, I cannot control the volume of the speaker using the phone's volume buttons since it is not connected through Spotify Connect, and when I do connect it manually to the JBL using the dedicated button in the app, the music stops for half a second and then resumes, after that I can control the volume using the volume buttons of the phone. It feels as though "switching" who controls the stream (Alexa or Spotify app) causes a disruption.

Hi @badaz,

Thanks for reaching out!

Have you tried unlinking and re-linking Spotify to Alexa? It's also worth performing a clean reinstall of the app by following the steps here.

Something else that's worth checking is if the same behavior occurs with Google Assistant or over Bluetooth. Could you check if that's the case?

Keep us posted. Cheers 🤘
