Car Thing Not Reading Adapter

I just got the Car Thing today, but when I tried to hook it up in my car with the adapter that it came with in the box, it gave me a warning to use the adapter provided with my device. I’m trying to let it charge but the connection port in behind is a little awkward and keeps slipping out. Not sure what to do or if it just needs to charge? Considering using my own car charger to see if that helps.
