[Troubleshooting] Linux Spotify

Having trouble with Spotify on your Desktop app? Here’s what to try first.

• Search the Community

Someone might have asked your question on the Community before.
So type your issue into the search box and have a look.

• Basic troubleshooting

Go through these steps one at a time. They can help you solve most issues on your own.

1. Clear Spotify cache
killall spotify
rm -rf $HOME/.cache/spotify/Storage

2 Check this thread for troubleshooting connection issues.

3 Ask a friend or family member to sign into Spotify on your Desktop. See if the issue is persisting on their account too. If yes, the issue is the device and can likely be solved with more troubleshooting.
4. Change settings within the app: Sync quality, Stream Quality, Gapless Playback, Crossfade. See if a different combination of these settings makes a difference.

• Advanced troubleshooting 

1. Is spotify starting normally?

spotify

1. Can you play a sound?

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

2. Is the system recognizing your sound card?

aplay -l

3. Is Spotify running on prefered sound card? Change between sound cards in gnome/unity control center.

unity-control-center sound
gnome-control-center sound

4. Nothing works so far? Report your issue!

spotify >$HOME/spotify-dump.txt 2>&1

   or

strace spotify > $HOME/spotify-dump 2>&1

Known issues : 

Error while loading shared libraries: libgcrypt.so.11 - fix debian / fix ubuntu.

Spotify on Linux doesn't play local mp3 files - fix.

Tips :

Add Spotify's testing repository:

echo deb http://repository.spotify.com testing non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list

Install Spotify 0.9.17

sudo apt-get install spotify-client-0.9.17

Some information and template is taken from here.

Linux is not officialy supported by Spotify.

wplagges try to delete the .cache/spotify/ folder if that would fix the folowing error.

If you have the chance, try to look to the OS integration too.
In Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon I'm having issues with Spotify not showing in the window list (but it's still accessible from alt tab) and also the album covers and media buttons not being integrated in the sound applet (how it supposed/used to work: http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2015/09/cinnamon-2-8-better-sound-applet/ )

This is known issue with this 1.0.x build. 

At least i was able to listen music for more than 3 hours without getting segmentation fault 😛

I will try to reach out @jooon for some unofficial patch notes : )

Can get mpris to work in Plasma 5.6.1 I can see it in the dbus list but in Plasma it doesnt show up. VLC works fine.

I updated my app, and now i can't find my starred (favoritos) playlist anywhere. It's still in the play.spotify, so at least it's not lost.

@vazerick I'd recommend downgrading to a previous version, until they iron out some stuff in the current version. I'm using 0.9.11.27 and feels much better with Cinnamon.

for some reason I do not have any possibilty to change settings in "startup and window behaviour" anymore, there are none.

I am using ubuntu mate.

Operating system: Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64-bit

Spotify version: 0.9.17.1

I'm unable to create new playlist or folder of playlists via "New Playlist" button or command bar on the top. The bar to type name appears but playlist/folder is not created. Similarly, I cannot change names of already existing playlists/folders.

Should I try some other version of Spotify? If so, which one would be the best?

@OhSeeEmilyPlay I use 0.9.11.27. Works great with Cinnamon and I don't feel the need to update it.

@osornios I uinstalled my Spotify and installed version that you suggested. Sadly it had the same problem 😞

Now I installed latest stable version (I think), which is version 1.0.25.127 and it works!

   I start spotify normally, but it doesn't show in the taskbar. So, always when I click in other window or minimize spotify, I can't find him anymore, execept by alt+tabbing to it. He continues to play even not showing in the taskbar.

Fellow brazilian here, also using Linux Mint Rosa Cinnamon edition.
Also a premium subscriber which is not that happy with the current Linux player.

This is a known issue, which I hope will be fixed soon.
However, there is a workaround which is moving the player to another workspace and then moving it back.
It'll make the Spotifly player visible in the taskbar.

I recommend using the testing version (from the testing repository) since the latest patch corrected MPRIS2 (the version is 1.0.27).
For Linux Mint Rosa it means that in this latest version the sound applet works as it's supposed to work.
